What is Gringo Language Academy

We are a subscription-based, online, adult language learning community.

Gringo Language Academy brings together small-group classes, 1:1 coaching, and real conversation to Spanish learners of every level, background, and ability - novice to nativo.

At our core, we are a group of like-minded language enthusiasts, all striving for linguistic éxito and the confidence to connect en español.

Personalized

Your goals, your plan. We tailor classes, resources, and coaching to fit your journey.

Flexible

Life happens. Drop into convenient, online classes six days a week, and pause or cancel anytime. No stress, just Spanish.

Affordable

One plan, all the perks, and discounts for your dedication—because learning Spanish shouldn't cost un ojo de la cara.

Holistic

With a blend of unique classes and one-on-one coaching, we get you speaking Spanish - and keep you doing so - from Day 1.

Conversational

Native-speaking partners help you build real confidence through real conversations.

Connected

No one speaks Spanish in a vacuum—so why learn it like that? Our comunidad has your back, every step of the way.

CLASSES

Not school. Something better.

We’ve all done school before. And most of us are kind of over it.

At Gringo Language Academy, our “classes” don’t look like school—they look like:

Opportunities to update your playlist or find a new favorite Spanish podcast

Book clubs at all levels, allowing you to learn culture and history at the same time as language

Virtual coffee chats and Happy Hours en español, since we all just want to hang out and talk from time to time!

And, sure, we sprinkle in the grammar help when we need it, too. That stuff can be spicy!

🌶️ CURRENT CLASS SCHEDULE

How spicy do you like it?

Our classes are, as you can see, rated on a picante-scale from one to five chiles.

Our single chile classes are perfect for the true beginner, while two and three chile classes are ideal for the strong beginner and intermediate students in our groups.  Four and five chiles are reserved for stronger students with more advanced control of the language.

We also supplement our advanced classes with additional opportunities to practice with our Spanish-speaking conversation partners.

Please note that times shown are, most likely, in Pacific Time (PT).
To avoid confusion, please verify any offset in the bottom corner of the calendar.

FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

Travel isn't always possible...

...but that doesn't mean you can't practice with native Spanish-speakers from across the globe. These real-life connections build confidence and curiosity, and keep you motivated to continue on your journey.

We're also proud to launch a new program that lets you become the language pro. Our Intercambios—language exchanges—feature online chats with Spanish speakers looking to improve their English. The format keeps a nice balance between Spanish and English, making sure everyone gets to teach and learn together.

This opportunity is open to anyone, even those not currently enrolled in classes at Gringo Language Academy. If you're interested, just add your name below, and we'll reach out with more information.

All levels welcome, novice to native!

Our Favorites

We are often asked if there are resources we particularly recommend or rely on. These are just a few.

(And, yes, as an Amazon affiliate, we earn un poquito off of your Amazon purchases via these links, for which we say "¡Gracias!")

Do you recommend a book for true Beginners?

No one book can ever be "enough" to really get someone started with the language, but we love Learn Spanish with Frida Kahlo for a variety of reasons. It is a great reference, not only for the language, but for the artist as well, and it is what we are currently using with our Beginner cohorts.

There are so many words in Spanish. How do I know which ones to focus on?

Go for utility, amigos. We particularly like the Dover classic 2001 Most Useful Spanish Words. (We agree with a good 1500 of them at least!) Organized alphabetically and also thematically, and with examples in both Spanish and English for usage, they are hard to beat (as is the price). We also have created flashcards you are welcome to study from here.

What sorts of books do you use for your Club de Lectura?

We are always choosing different books and stories to work with in our Book Club, but here are a couple we've done before: Short Stories in Spanish for Beginners (A2/Strong Beginners), El color de mis palabras (Intermediate/Advanced, B1+), Cajas de cartón  (Intermediate/Advanced, B1+), as well plenty of others. Questions about how we use them or what Book Club is like? Just ask!

Any other books you would recommend?

Sometimes, we just need to grind through the hard stuff. We are currently starting to work with Perfecting the Prepositions in Spanish in one of our Gritty Grammar series (Intermediate/B1+). It is a nice blend of explanation and practice, comes with some great online flashcards, and has been a nice non-screen supplement to our in-class conversations.

Maybe this is silly, but any totally non-essential stuff to make learning Spanish fun?

📒 Sometimes, you just need a fun place to take all the notes you know are to come... Here's a notebook we should really just buy in bulk. ¡Lotería!
☕‍ Especially for those in our Frida Kahlo Beginner's Cohort, we do love our coffee in this mug.
